Pinene is the common name used to refer to two isomeric bicyclic monoterpenes, alpha-pinene and beta-pinene, which are major components of pine resin and other conifers. This is the reason it has this name, although it is the most widely distributed terpene in nature. In fact, we find them not only in the plant kingdom, as both compounds are part of the chemical communication system of insects and act as insect repellents.
