Limonene is the principal cyclic terpene component of the essential oil found in the peel of lemons and other citrus fruits, from which it gets its name. It is the second most widely distributed terpene in nature and serves as an intermediate product in the biosynthesis of other terpenes. Unlike pinene, limonene is not found in insects, but it also exhibits repellent and insecticidal activity. Limonene is widely used in the food and pharmaceutical industries as a flavoring agent. Recently, its use has been studied in formulations of dermal patches to enhance the transdermal absorption of active ingredients.
